2014 marks the 10th year that David Banner and his charity organization Heal the Hood have gifted under resourced families in Jackson, MS at Christmas time. The initiative evolved out of Banner’s personal ritual of giving to some of the most resilient and less fortunate families during the holiday season, especially those impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

The partnering organizations for Heal The Hood at Christmas are: The Boys and Girls Club of Central Mississippi; Sisters With a Throttle and WJMI – 99Jamz Radio Station. The partners nominate approximately 15 families to Heal The Hood and these families benefit from the “Heal the Hood at Christmas” project. Each partner nominates candidates to Heal The Hood, Inc. who strongly meet the criteria and they feel need help providing gifts for their families during the holiday season. The chosen have shown resiliency in difficult times and Heal the Hood hopes to encourage and support them on their journey.  Heal The Hood provides gifts tailored to their needs from new shoes, clothes, athletic and artistic interests as well as school supplies.

Gifts are primarily purchased from retailers in Jackson based on the families’ wish lists and needs. Every member of the family in the household is gifted with brand new items based on their needs, wants and/or interests. Heal the Hood includes age appropriate, developmental, and educational gifts for children in the families. In addition, each family receives a gift card to help buy groceries or other items for their holiday celebrations. David Banner, assisted by a focused team of volunteers, hosted a reception on Saturday, December 19, 2014 where he personally presented the gifts to each family.

The mission of Heal the Hood, Inc. is to provide relief and recovery assistance to under resourced populations of the Gulf Region in response to natural disasters, and support youth development and recreation opportunities in Mississippi on an ongoing basis.
